Is a Wood Burner Cheaper to run than a Gas Fire?
There are many cases where a Wood Burner is a good idea.
If you have access to a free supply of wood.
If you can buy wood in large quantities and store it for a long period of time.
If you are home all day and can use the stove as opposed to central heating.
Owning a Wood Burning or Multi Fuel Stove is a bit of a lifestyle thing. It can only save you money if you use it instead of your central heating, not as well as. The most usual and efficient way of using a Stove as part of an efficient Heating System is to use your central heating for getting up in the morning (warm the bathroom, bedroom etc) and then let the stove take over for space heating the rest of the day with an evening or night time boost with the central heating (warm the bathroom, bedroom etc.).
Always ensure that you have Thermostatic Radiator Valves on your Central Heating Radiators so you are not wasting gas when the area has been warmed by the Stove.
We always say it takes 3 weeks to become a Stove Expert. (that’s 21 days, not 3 weekends). If you get it right your home will be toasty warm all the time. The heat of a stove is like a cuddle.
If you have to buy your fuel in small quantities i.e. one bag at a time Gas is probably cheaper. But it’s not nearly as much fun.
Take the time to learn how to use your stove and it will delight you and provide you with the gorgeous heat that only a Stove can produce.
