This is one of the easiest questions to answer.
Wood is best for your stove if you have a FREE supply and plenty of room to store it. If you can buy enough wood cheap enough then it’s great.
But if you have to buy your wood Kiln Dried, by the bag’ you are almost certainly better off with Smokeless coal.
Smokeless Coal is concentrated wood. Smokeless Coal burns at a higher temperature and for longer. It is easier to store and does not need to be seasoned. It must be kept dry, or like wood, it will use all its heat to dry itself out leaving little heat from your stove to come into the room.
Don’t despair though, if you would rather the look of wood-burning as opposed to coal, try this tip.
‘After loading your stove with Smokeless coal place a single log on top and you will get the flames of a log fire with the underlying heat of the coal.’
PS. All coal should be smokeless
PPS. Try lots of different Smokeless coals before you buy any in quantity as some will suit your stove and flue better than others.
