Once again this weekend the Firebrigade have reported an increase in Chimney Fires. Multi-Fuel and Wood Burning Stoves are GREAT. But………. its a BOMBFIRE in your living room. This is not a DIY JOB. All Stoves must be fitted properly by a HETAS REGISTERED FITTER. The fuel must be CLEAN and DRY. Wood must be seasoned for up to 2 YEARS. Use a FLUE FREE agent to prevent a build-up of tar. Finally, have your Chimney Swept.
Last week a man came into the shop and asked for a HETAS Certificate for his Stove so he could sell his house. He fitted it himself, has never had his chimney sweep and wants me to take responsibility for it. I don’t think so.
You can’t do your own MOT on your car. In fact, most cars can only be serviced by a garage now. You wouldn’t install your own Gas Boiler or a new Fuse Box. So should you really be installing your own Wood Burning Stove?
